Save the Date: The Rhythm of Design Part II
The Rhythm of Design is a captivating journey through the evolution of design and style, exploring the cultures, art, history, and materials that shaped them.
Beginning with the early medieval period, each semester our journey moves into a new century, style, and country, revealing how design evolves in response to the worlds around it.
Looking Back at Part I
In our first installment, we traveled to the Alhambra in Spain, exploring the extraordinary architectural achievements of the Muslim world during the medieval period. We considered the profound influence of these traditions and the ways in which Muslims, Christians, and Jews lived alongside one another, exchanged ideas, and developed distinctive and beautiful hybrid styles.
Coming This Fall: A New Episode
We are especially fortunate to have the expert guidance of Perry Sayles, renowned architectural historian and interior designer. Perry’s deep knowledge, extensive travels, and wonderful photography will bring our next chapter vividly to life.

This fall, we travel to 9th-century Asturias, where we will explore the remarkable progress of the Christian kingdoms as they expanded into new territories and built magnificent churches and palaces in the Pre-Romanesque style.
We will focus on the marvels of painted frescoes that are still visible today, 1,200 years later, and the optical engineering of celosia (lattice).
To add to your understanding and enjoyment, we will also be adding immersive field outings to complement these webinar presentations.

Along the way, we’ll discover how these buildings reflect the ideas, influences, and traditions of their time—including fascinating connections to Roman architecture—and consider how a distinctive style emerged from this meeting of history, culture, and artistic practice.
