The Rhythm of Design Part II

A Journey to 9th-Century Asturias

September 28, 2026

The Rhythm of Design is a journey through the evolution of design and style, exploring how cultures, art, history, and materials come together to shape the world around us.

Beginning with the early medieval period, each semester moves into a new century, style, and country, revealing how design evolves in response to the people, places, ideas, and events of its time.

From Alhambra to Asturias

In Part I, we traveled to the Alhambra in Spain. We explored the medieval Muslim world, where Muslims, Christians, and Jews lived alongside one another, exchanging ideas and developing remarkable hybrid styles.

This fall, we continue the journey north to 9th-century Asturias, a land defined by its dramatic, unyielding geography, where the Cantabrian Mountains crash directly into the deep blue waters of the Cantabrian Sea, the northern arm of the Atlantic Ocean.

Here, the Christian kingdom expanded into new territories, giving rise to magnificent churches and palaces in the distinctive Pre-Romanesque style.

Some of these buildings still preserve their painted frescoes, created more than 1,200 years ago. We will also explore the extraordinary optical engineering of celosia, or latticework, and the ways these architectural details transformed both light and space.

Perry Sayles

We are delighted to welcome back Perry Sayles, renowned architectural historian, interior designer, and photographer.

With an extraordinary depth of knowledge and extensive travels throughout the world, Perry brings these places to life through his remarkable photography and storytelling.

Coming This Fall

This semester, our journey will extend beyond the webinar itself, with field outings to:

  • Yale

  • The Cloisters

  • Hispanic Society Museum

  • The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Along the way, we will discover how buildings reflect ideas, influences, traditions, and connections to Roman architecture—and how distinctive styles emerge from the history, culture, and artistic practices of a place.

This live presentation concludes with a Q&A session. It counts as one CC credit for all attendees and accredited members of the AAA.

We hope you’ll join us for this next chapter in the journey.
