It is a treasured body of material that provides important insight into our heritage. By examining each piece, we can follow not only the evolution of forms but also immigration patterns, demographic trends, growth of the economy, foreign and domestic influences, and changing needs and tastes. Private and institutional collectors continue to vie for the best examples as we have seen in recent auctions at Christie's and Sotheby's

Week III - NEW DATE: Monday, December 13th 1-2 pm EST "The American Masters: Hudson River School Painters”

(The webinar will be recorded for your convenience, and one CE credit will be given for each class taken in the series for accredited members of AAA.)

Hudson River School paintings reflect three themes of America in the 19th century: discovery, exploration, and settlement. They also depict the American landscape as a pastoral setting, where human beings and nature coexist peacefully. Hudson River School landscapes are characterized by their realistic, detailed, and sometimes idealized portrayal of nature, often juxtaposing peaceful agriculture and the remaining wilderness which was fast disappearing from the Hudson Valley just as it was coming to be appreciated for its qualities of ruggedness and sublimity. Included in this talk are masterpieces by Thomas Moran and Albert Bierstadt, whose awe-inspiring canvases of the West encouraged the creation of our national parks; Sanford Robinson Gifford, whose command of Luminism established a visual poetry that rivals the literary genius of his contemporaries; Charles Burchfield, whose modernist conceptions acquaint the viewer with the artist’s deeply personal relationship with the forest; Rockwell Kent, whose visions of Alaska reawaken a lost sense of wonder; and the immutable Grandma Moses, who takes us home to contemplate a simpler place and time. In this webinar you will learn how to view American Master paintings with a connoisseur’s eye.

Week V- Wednesday, December 8th 1-2 pm EST "Tribute to Traditionalist Icons”: Parish-Hadley and Associates through the eyes of Brian J. McCarthy

The partnership between Sister Parish and Albert Hadley influenced American design for more than three decades, and the office was a training ground for dozens of designers, who lead the field in their own right today such as: Brian McCarthy, Bunny Williams, Brian Del Toro, David Kleinberg, and many more..

The firm was known for the low-keyed handsomeness of their work and for their well-heeled clientele. It included President and Mrs. John F. Kennedy; the philanthropists Brooke Astor and Enid Annenberg Haupt; William S. Paley, the chairman of CBS, and members of the Bronfman, Getty, Mellon, Rockefeller, Vanderbilt and Whitney clans. Albert Hadley described Sister Parish as a total romantic. "Her work was enormously pretty and feminine with a great sense of style, luxury and comfort," he said. "I suppose mine is a bit more edited and architectural. I'm more of a minimalist than she was." Together they formed what many consider the most iconic interior design firm in America at that time.

Brian McCarthy who was an associate with Parish Hadley, and author of the book:
Parish-Hadley Tree of Life: An Intimate History of the Legendary Design Firm will give us his first-hand account of the inner workings of this iconic firm. He will discuss the state of the interior design profession and will comment on the trends and predictions in the antique market as well. Join Brian J. Mccarthy in his beautifully appointed office at 57 west 57th street New York City, for stories about the early beginnings and his transgression today of his own highly successful Interior Design Business in the heart of NYC. Not to be missed!

Week IV- Wednesday, November 17th 1-2 pm EST "Quilts: The Evolving Art”

(The webinar has been recorded for your convenience, and One CE credit will be given for each class taken in the series for accredited members of AAA.)

Amish women in the United States came to quilting far later than  their “English” sisters. Mostly of German heritage, they used featherbeds for warmth and considered quilting a luxury that did not fit their austere life-style. All that changed in the mid-19th century and by the mid-20th century, some of their creations became highly sought-after collectibles.

Employing the tradition of sewing and design that came to her through her maternal family, artist Faith Ringgold deliberately set herself apart from the male-dominated art world by bringing the Black experience to life in her vibrantly colored quilts. Ringgold also opened the door for other exciting African-American quilt artists, including Bisa Butler and Emma Amos, both subjects of recent major exhibitions.

This webinar will conclude with Angelo Madrigale, Senior Contemporary Art expert at Doyle’s Auction House, who will fill you in on auction prices for the recent 20th Century Abstract Expressionism exhibition at the auction gallery.

Presented by: Louise Devenish, Gavin Spanierman, and Angelo Madrigale.

Week I - Oct 6th, 2021 from 1-2pm:

Georgia O’Keeffe, known to some as the “Mother of American Modernism,” has become legendary for her paintings of greatly magnified, lush flowers and softly contoured New Mexico landscapes. But before she achieved fame in the art world, she was a school teacher in a remote Texas town. How did she make the transition?

Decades later, when Kay WalkingStick began painting, success came mostly to those who were active in the New York art scene  who excelled at hard-edged realism and abstract expressionism. WalkingStick met the challenge and gained a level of recognition, but it was not until she integrated her Native American heritage into her work that she reached professional maturity, joy in her work, and national acclaim.
